Bike traffic in New Orleans has increased 52 percent according to the University of New Orleans’ Transportation Institute between 2010-2014. The number of bikes on the streets has grown since then. It’s easy to forget a bicyclist when a car is parked and the cyclist is passing. Too many bike crashes involve a car door. That is the inspiration for creating Look Before You Open, a car door awareness campaign to teach and promote bicycle safety that will save lives.
The mission of Look Before You Open is to save bicyclists from car door injury or death. The goal is to teach and promote the Opposite Hand Technique to drivers and passengers how to open a car door to ensure the safety of people biking.
